A Study of Resilience Among Students With Hearing Impairment

Abstract

The Purpose of This Study is to determine the level of resilience among secondary school students with hearing impairment. A group of 53 students with hearing impairment were selected purposively from the population of secondary school hearing impaired students. Survey method was utilised by the researcher to identify the level of resilience amongsecondary school students with hearing impairment, using a resilience scale, which was developed and validated by the researcher. Reliability of the scale in terms of Cronbach alphawas 0.82. Mann Whitney U testand Kruskal Wallis H Test were used to analyse quantitatively the resilience level of upper primary school students with hearing impairment. Findings of this research study reflect that there is a significant difference between students with conductive and sensorineural hearing loss in their resilience level. Moreover gender and degree of hearing loss strongly affects the level of resilience of students with hearing impairment, whereas the medium of instruction, parental education and parental income not determined the resilience of students with hearing impairment. This study suggested that secondary school students with hearing impairment should be given training in life skills education, in order to understand them, to overcome the stress and to achieve the set goals in their life.
