ADHD and Comorbid Problems: A preliminary Report

Abstract

ADHD is a persistent problem, manifesting its core symptoms throughout the life cycle, from preschool through adult life. ADHD is a condition characterized by different levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity and gives rise to significant academic, social, and emotional problems at home and at school. Socially, they have poor relationships with peers, teachers, and parents. The study was planned to assess and examine the incidence of co morbid problems with ADHD. A sample of 41 patients who came to the Outpatient Department of Psychiatry at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi were included in the sample on availability basis. Results revealed that patients ADHD is more prominent in early years of life in the age group of 6-10 years and in the children of nuclear families. It was also found that the oppositional defiant disorder is more prominent comorbid disorder with ADHD. Findings are discussed in the light of previous studies along with implications.
