Attachment Characteristics, Emotional Intelligence and Academic Success: An Exploratory Study Among Indian High School Students

Abstract

The current study was conducted to identify the association among attachment characteristics, emotional intelligence and academic success in adolescents. This study is also conducted to explore the gender differences in the mentioned variables. A sample of 60 high school students was accumulated. The age range of the adolescents was 12 to 15 years. For this study, the tools used were Emotional Intelligence Test (Sharma, 2011) and Adolescence Attachment Questionnaire (West et al., 1998). For academic success weighted average of the student’s three terms exam percentage was calculated. The statistical techniques such as coefficient of correlation and student’s t-test were used. The results proved academic success to be significantly related to emotional intelligence and attachment characteristics. Results also indicated a significant relationship between attachment characteristics and some domains of emotional intelligence. No gender difference was seen in any of the variables under study. Detailed results and their implications have been explained in the paper.
