Academic Performance of University Students and Role of Social Support

Academic performance refers to how students deal with their studies and how they cope with or accomplish different tasks given to them by their teachers. In the current study, gender and perceived social support were evaluated as significant factors associated with academic performance across different disciplines and categories of education. The sample consisted of 286 Pondicherry University students of different disciplines in which 109 were males and 177 were females. The data was collected using a combination of structured and standardized questionnaire. After analysis, it was observed that females tend to perform better than males across almost all disciplines and categories and higher the perceived social support, better is the academic performance.
