Abstract

The aim of the present research was to understand the stress and challenges faced by high school teachers. For this purpose,a sample of 30 private high school teachers and 30 government high school teachers were selected using purposive sampling. It was hypothesized that the private school teachers are more stress prone as compared to government high school teachers. Occupational Role Stress (ORS) scale by Pareek(1983) and 5 semi-structured questions were used. Mixed method approach and ex post facto design was used in the present study. The results indicate that there is significant difference on the dimension of role stagnation, role expectation conflict and role isolation at 0.05 level of significance and a significant difference at 0.01 level of significance on the dimension of self- role distance, role ambiguity and resource inadequacy. Further the qualitative data was collected fromthe teachers in order to gain a deeper understanding of challenges and the stressors faced by themat their corresponding work settings.
