A Correlational Study of Burnout, Mental Health, Coping Strategies and Organizational Climate Among Police Personnel

Abstract

It is beyond doubt that the nature of the job policemen perform, the timing and the socio-political and other pressures under which they work has significantly increased the level of stress among them. There are numerous instances where the police ‘Jawan’ in a spell of anger opened fire at their colleagues and officers. Even there are talks of improving police-public relationship. All this indicate the stress and strain of policing and there are numerous kinds of health consequences for the policemen themselves. Present study was intended to examine the relationship among burnout, mental health, coping strategies and organizational climate among police personnel. One hundred eighty four constables and head constables (only male) selected on purposive basis from Haryana police were administered Moslach burnout inventory, GHQ-12, Coping resources inventory and organizational climate inventory. Data were analyzed by calculating coefficient of correlation. Results revealed that organizational climate and coping resources were significantly associated with burnout and mental health.
