A Study on Family Environment, Approval Motive and Career- Family Values of Working Women in Different Family Structures

Abstract

Present study is addressed to find out perceived family environment, approval motive and careerfamily values of working women living in two different family structures, that is, nuclear and joint families. 100 working women are selected through random sampling technique from two family set up. Therefore each group consisting of 50 working women aged between 20 to 25 years. Four questionnaires namely General Information Schedule, Perceived family environment Scale, Approval motive Scale and Career-family values Scale are administered on the selected samples. Results suggest that working women living in joint families perceived their family environment as more favourable than working women living in nuclear families.Working women living in joint family structure also have greater approval motive and family values. On the other hand, working women living in nuclear families have higher career values in comparison to those belonging to joint families. Findings also reveal that approval motive and family values are positively correlated. There also exists a significant correlation between perceived family environment and family values. Moreover, results indicate that family values are negatively correlated with approval motive as well as perceived family environment of working women residing at Kolkata.
