Parent-Child Relationship as a Determinant of Level of Aspiration among Adolescent

Abstract

The present study was under taken with the purpose of studying level of aspiration among adolescents in relation to parent child relationship. This study was conducted on a sample of 100 adolescents i.e. 50 boys and 50 girls in the age group of 14 to 16 years studying in various public schools of Shimla town of Himachal Pradesh. Parent Child Relationship Scale (Nalini Rao, 1989) and Level of Aspiration Scale (Shah and Bhargwaa, 1987) were administered to the selected sample of adolescent boys and girls. t-test was carried out to see the significance of difference between boys and girls on level of aspiration. Furthermore, correlation and regression analysis was employed to find out the effect of parent child relationship on level of aspiration. Results indicated that adolescent boys and girls share different relationship with their parents and this relationship affect their level of aspiration. Overall, loving mother has a significant and positive relation with the level of aspiration of boys. Whereas, neglecting father has a significant and negative relation with the level of aspiration of boys .On the other hand, protecting father and object reward from fathers has significant and positive relation with the level of aspiration among girls. In addition, symbolic punishment from father and neglecting father has significant and negative relation with level of aspiration among girls.
