Abstract

The word ‘Cancer’ is a dreaded word and can induce fear. The idea of getting diagnosed with this fatal disease can be disturbing. In view of paucity of research on Carcinophobia in India, an attempt has been made to describe the experiences of a 19 years old female with a family history of cancer. The present case study attempts to evaluate the role of Cognitive Behavior Therapy in management of carcinophobic patients. The following paper discusses patient’s anxiety which was assessed at higher levels on Beck Anxiety Inventory. It was managed with the help of 14 sessions of cognitive behavior therapy. Following which her anxiety level reduced remarkably. Thus, the study demonstrates irrational fears and morbid threats can result in extreme form of anxiety, but they can be successfully dealt with applying cognitive behavior therapy.
