Abstract

Work motivation and optimism play a major role in the personal and working life of people. These mental processes help working people in their goal attainment and self fulfillment. Present study was undertaken with the objective of to assess the level of work motivation and optimism among artisans. Further it was also intended to investigate the relationship between work motivation and optimism among artisans. Study was conducted at Roorkee, Uttrakhand where artisans are working in small scale surveying instrument industries. This cluster of surveying instruments is only cluster in India where surveying instruments and antiques are being manufactured. In order to achieve the objectives, 60 artisans were taken mostly from Muslim community with varied demographic profile. Standardized tools by Sjoberg and Lind’s (1994) and Scheier & Carver (1985) were used to assess the work motivation and optimism respectively. Data were analyzed using Pearson’r and t-test. Findings of the study revealed that artisans have a moderate level of work motivation as well as optimism. The reason may be the lack of support by government in the growth and sustainability of their enterprises. A positive relationship was found between work motivation and optimism. No significant difference was found between demographic variables and work motivation followed by optimism
